Day 18 #SOL21: Contemplating Collective Effervescence

"Collective joy and pain—whether at sports games or rock concerts, at vigils or funerals—are sacred experiences. They are so deeply human that they cut through our differences and tap into our hardwired nature." ~Dr. Brené Brown

As cool rain began to fall and our weary feet needed a rest, Chris led us to a quaint Irish Pub, not far from the Magnificent Mile. The kind host seated us at a spaced out table, and it didn't take long for the venue to fill up. Folks decked out in shamrocks and leprechauns converged together to celebrate St. Patty's Day in a city known for its bold parades and flamboyant green river. Our journey through Chicago had led us to this moment in time, and we all got a little excited when we saw a group of men in kilts arrive, carrying bagpipes. Minutes later we would experience a glimpse of collective effervescence—a sensation of sacredness shared when we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

While the squealing bagpipes and beating drums roared, the entire place lit up with joy. Folks whipped out their cellphones, hoping to capture a tiny sliver of the shared experience. Grinning from ear to ear, I snuck a peek at my family. Intense delight overwhelmed my senses and an an inextricable connection left me feeling tender and exposed. Chris, Hunter, and Chandler are my world, and we are thrilled to soon add Serena, my bonus-son's fiancé to our mix. As the music subsided and the moment of collective effervescence passed, I knew I needed to write about this tiny slice of life. Gratitude abounds.
