Back At It: Planning, Prepping, Practice

I stumbled across the hashtag, #TeachWritetober19, on Twitter this weekend, and on a whim, I reached out to former and new colleagues asking them to join me on the journey. My sweet friend, Tara Reed, took me up on the offer, and although my favorite TV show, This is Us, is currently playing in the background, I find myself crafting a short blog.

It's a new month, and boy howdy do I need a fresh start. I'm grateful I got to begin the first day of October with a group of fabulous primary teachers at Rann Elementary. We are now about six weeks into launching the WUOS in Decatur ISD, and although there are tons of things to celebrate, we've also encountered our fair share of struggles. These ladies have fully embraced the units, and like most people new to the work, they are just trying to keep their heads above water.

Our PLC interactions began by interrogating the difference between planning, prepping, and practice. The teachers expressed how reading, processing, and annotating the units consume a large amount of their time. They also expressed how they were living day-to-day, session-by-session. I assured them every teacher new to the units of study experience similar hurdles. Together, we learned how to map out the unit—one bend at a time. The teams analyzed the correlating RLA TEKS and thought about how the units support the recursive writing process.

In the end, we all walked away with a bit more clarity. Maintaining a beginner's mindset amidst a sea of change is never easy, but these ladies choose to find the bright spots and they celebrate small wins. I am super grateful for the chance to be a guide-by-their-side, and I couldn't have asked for a better way to kick off a new month!
